It seems to me that every thing that I do to my friends cars always turns out good the first time (usually) with not too many problems. BUT :mad everytime that I start working on my Vette everything wrong happens berfore it is done and it might take hours more even if the jobs are the same. :cry Just curious.
Re: Does this ever happen to you????????? (Corvettelvr73)
I think its because we want things to be perfect with our cars. With a friends car you might only fix the problem at hand and make a mental note of other things you discover along the way. I guess the "While i'm here" virus only affects you when its your car.

I don't ever get to work on anyone elses cars but...
When I did the VB&P front monospring install, it said 6 hours install time (if I remember right). I started prepping the car on a friday night, figuring that if I had it up in the air on stands with wheels off, even pessimistically I should be able to have it done by late saturday, or sometime sunday...
In the end, I figured it took me somewhere between 40 and 48 hours to do it, 2 broken ball joint pullers, 2 cans of PBlaster, and one small tank of propane for the torch..... Plus some small pieces of skin of course

Power steering fluid? What's that? Oh! That stuff thats all over my garage floor! :jester
You too, huh? I was wondering which fluid it was, all over my floor, until the power steering was making horrible noises when I started her up this morning... now I know.

Same here... AND, my wife especially finds something wrong with my work... I just hate to take things to so-called "professionals" that have bubba tattooed on their forehead... :banghead: :banghead:
example... Just redid the brakes on my wife's C5... turned the rotors, new pads, etc... the new pads have glazed and there is a squeak when she brakes... :nonod: I guess I will take the pads off and resurface them again...

You mean that's not the way it's supposed to be??? :D
Re: Does this ever happen to you????????? (Corvettelvr73)
Every time I go to work on a car Kym asks "how long will it take you"? So I answer, "hmmm, oil change and new plugs..about 45 mins" But she knows that really means 2hrs or more.
 :yesnod: :smash:
Re: Does this ever happen to you????????? (Black68Vette)
Among all the other leaks and stains all over my garage floor, at least thats one I don't have to worry about... (manual steering)
My garage floor doesn't have any stains. I put a large tarp on the floor and park on that. I just got rid of the valve cover gaskets and replaced the oil pan gasket. No oil on the tarp yet. Well, from the front anyway. Still need to replace the seals in the diff. Hopefully I've fixed the oil leak up front after going through too many valve cover gaskets. I finally just went to high temp black RTV cause every type of gasket I used ended up leaking.
And I'm in the same boat. It seems like jobs take FOREVER on both of my cars, the vette especially.
Re: Does this ever happen to you????????? (Corvettelvr73)
I have 3 vehicles. A 1994 Subaru SVX, a 1978 Pontiac Trans Am, and a 1992 Suzuki GS500E. If I'm lucky I'll have 2 streetable, but typicly I can only keep 1 on the road at a time.
The "while I'm here" virus hit's me all the time. Once I've got the SVX (what's supposed to be my daily driver) back to roadworthyness I'm pulling the motor on the T/A and start tearing into it. I'm going to use it to learn how to port and rebuild a motor and make all my mistakes before I dive into my Corvette (once I get one).
Hopefully it can also distract me long enough to enjoy my future Vette for a bit before I take it off the road to "do a quick fix on some minor engineering deficiences" aka "let's rebuild the whole car from the ground up and try to make it something it's not".
Re: Does this ever happen to you????????? (Corvettelvr73)
I just use a factor of 3 on time required for anything, not including research time. I also figure 50% more on cost (for the specialty tools I don't have yet).
Reminds me of the sign in my mechanic's shop:
LABOR RATES:
$25 per hour....$35 if you watch...$45 if you help....$55 if you worked on it first.
