Default question...."cracked block"

ok...i just bought a short block and when it got here i noticed that that along where the starter bolts up there is a 3 inch crack that starts next to the top ear where the starter bolt goes and down towards the flywheel....the guy i bought it from says it was not that way when he sent it (but of course) he says he had a starter bolted up to it when i was shipped out, but no starter was there when it arrived......the crack has rust in it...the motor was in transit for 2-3 days...my question is: "how long does it take for cast iron to rust in general?"

Very light surface rust could form in 2 or 3 day's if it is really wet.

If the rust is very heavy at all, sounds like he is trying to pull the wool over your eyes..

If it's on the outside only, take it to a welding shop. Easy to repair. Prolly cost ya less than $30.
