I just got a quote of $279 to Jet-Hot coat my headers. I am going to get the new Sterling color. My question is:
1. What experiences has anyone had with this coating?
2. They claim that the under hood temp is decreased by ~40 degrees, is this true?
3. Are you happy with the results?
4. Is it durable?
It’s got to be better that taking my headers off and painting them with VHT paint every few years. Please give me your feedback on this.
Thanks Guys/Gals
I think that is the best thing you can do to your headers. It will outlast any paint and will help with engine temps. Make sure they coat the inside as well as outside.
I recently got a set from them. Haven't finished the install yet. I wish I had taken the extra time to get the uncoated headers in advance to clean up the dings and press marks on the tubes, as well as the weld and port inconsistencies on the flanges. The headers look fine, but they could look a lot better. In other words, Jet hot takes them as they come from the manufacturer and coats them. That's it. If there's a flaw you are stuck with it.
My headers are only 2 years old so they are in good shape. The quote is for inside and out. Thanks for the feedback. I know what I am doing this weekend.
Here's a pic after 5 years use. The first 8 inches have lost their shine. That actually happened almost right away because I was running too lean. The remainder of the headers all the way to the collector look like brand new. I called Jet Hot about it, and they said that even though I burned the shine off, the coating is still there and they will warranty rust or burn through for life.
I don't know about reduced temperatures because I went from the cast iron log right to the Jet Hot coated headers.
PS-you might want to talk with them about a package header and coating deal. Mine were $305 for the headers and the coating delivered to my door.
I have had the same experience biltogo had ,loss of shine . But all in all the coating is great and very durable inside and out . Not so sure about underhood heat though .
It doesn't help so much when you are driving, its when you stop driving. They cool down so much faster than the stock iron ones. The iron ones will be too hot to touch after the car has been off for hours, headers with jet hot coating will cool very fast. Someone here once posted that they could wrap there hand around the headers after the car has been off for only 15 minutes. I'm not sure how true that is but I know they are touchable in well under an hour.
I think it does help keep the heat down. The coating is supposed to reflect heat so the heat should be kept more inside the header tubes. I know my non coated headered formula feels way wamer under the hood than my coated header vette runninng somewhat similar set ups.
you'll like the coating...idon't know about keeping it cool under the hood up to 40 degrees...mine is still hot as hell! but the finish is compared to none!
The still get freaking hot tho'. I have a perfectly round scab on my pinky knuckle to prove it!
Chris
ps, mine also lost the shine. use neveral dull or someother impregnated cloth to clean stains before they become chemically attached to the ceramic and they will stay in like new condition for years.
I got a quote from Jet Hot also, $399 for Hookers. Got the following from Jegs. What's everyone's opinion? Cost, quality, name brand, etc.. Are these real Jet Hot? Says they are! THANKS!!!

A lifetime warranty that even covers RUST!
Dynomax headers are constructed from heavy 16-gauge tubing and Jet-Hot¨ coated inside and out to withstand temperatures up to 1300°F! This incredible coating will not turn blue or oxidize and will dramatically reduce engine compartment temperatures. Include gaskets, reducers, plus all the nuts and bolts required for installation.
Mine have worked ok. I had coating failure after the second year, but they recoated under warranty. They get hot as hell and have more contact space to radiate heat, so 40 degrees cooler may be optimistic.

Don't buy them because they "reduce underhood temp." Period! Buy them because the finish is permanent and you don't have to pull them all the time to paint them. :nopity

Thats why I am getting mine coated. The under hood temp reduction would just be a added bonus. As far a losing it shine, thats OK too. The dull coating will look so much better than RUST. Everything in my engine bay looks good execpt for the headers and my master cylinder (that will change someday also).
Dont forget to ask for the Forum discount.
Hudman - There is a Forum Discount???? How much? Very Cool
The temp reduction is over uncoated/unwrapped headers. Not sure if the 40 deg claim is accurate but it does seem to help when I compare my cars. No if your talking 40 off the surface temp of the header, not sure if you will feel much of diff from a drop from 840 to 800.
