Mud Flaps for my 69
What are you guys with 68/69's using for mud flaps? I need soemthing to keep the gravel and water from running up the side of mine ut I don't want to put anything permanent on it. If you have pictures that would be cool.
Thanks :chevy
Yep, I got me a set o' them thar Yosemite Sam flaps. They look real good. I got 'em after somebody stole my other set of flaps. the ones with the reclining Nekkid Chick on 'em.
I don't know aout you guys, but I rather touch up the fenders every couple of years instead of running mud flaps. I think it really takes away from the lines of the car. But I can understand your concern especially with my chrome sidepipes. :(
I was dropping off my steering gear box at Tony's Corvette Shop, in Gaithersburg Maryland, for a rebuild. I noticed a nice 63. Upon closer inspection, I saw the owner installed mud flaps. Here's how he did it:
A peice of clear 1/8 inch lexan was cut into a traditional mud flap shape. This can be obtained from any home store. The unique thing, was the mounting method. The flap was held inplace by paper clips. Not the silver ones that only hold 3 or 4 papers, I'm talking about the black metal ones with the silver arms. These arms are used for leverage to open the clip and be folded out of the way or removed after use. You can buy different sizes 1/4 inch up to 2 inches, at any office supply store. Two clips were used to hold the flap to the edge of the fender well.
This way you can remove or install them any time you want quickly. It offers you clean and stealthy protection, with out permanent mounting holes. I'm sure you can make all four for about $30.
I picked up a set of clear acrylic "chip clips" from MAD (I think). They came with a set of metal clips that are supposed to mount to the inner fender trim. After playing with them for half an hour, I went into the house and found four LARGE paper clips (no, not those, the black metal type that snap together and hold a large block of paper) which worked just right. I can get the plastic guards off in a snap and have yet to loose one.
Although I'm not 100% safe, I feel a lot better about driving these NH roads where large stones are a way of life.
I need to design some flaps to my vette.I hate to hear the sound of gravel bounce of the chromed sidemounts..
That Lexan idea was really smart..
