DTE One Lap Corvette Update 5-2-03
Travel / Registration / Tech Inspection Day
John and I traveled to the event today. I live in Cincinnati and he lives in Detroit. So we drove separately and met at the registration site in Painted Post, NY near the first track, Watkins Glen, which we will race at tomorrow.
John left Detroit yesterday afternoon to pick up the car at DynoTech Engineering (DTE) in Ft. Wayne IN. Phil Rickard, owner, and Jeremy Keeler, tuner, did some final prep of the car. New brakes and a final run on the Dyno. Thanks to DTE for all their help and support in this venture. John left Indiana this morning.
The One Lap of America is in it's 20th year and our competition looks pretty stiff. We are running in SSGT2 – this class is for Sports cars under $35K. We are driving John's 1989 Corvette heavily modified by DynoTech Engineering (DTE). We won't have to compete against the Vipers and the Z06s' which are in SSGT1. However, we are concerned about a few competitors. The Corcoran brothers are always fast in their supercharged Firebird, and Greg Hagopian makes that NOS powered Probe really sing. He'll end up losing time though if he keeps chatting with local law enforcement as he did this morning on the way in. We have the potential to finish first in our class, but it is a long week.
This is my third year (1999,2000, and 2003) for the event and it is John's fourth (1999,2000,2001 and 2003). It is great to see all the familiar faces. John and I don't get to see each other very much during the year, so we make up for it during this event. I see him enough this week to last all year. We usually don't speak to each other for at least a month following the event.
Well it is 10pm on the eve of the event. The calm before the storm is here. We will try to get some sleep tonight as it will be a rare commodity over the next week. Update tomorrow from the first event – Watkins Glen.
Keeping it shiny side up,
Mark and John

We got in at about 4:00pm. Upon arrival, we got registered and began putting the event stickers on the car. We got these cool yellow wristbands that designate us as participants. Maybe it means we should be admitted into a mental hospital, I'm not sure yet. Too early to call
I sure hope they get to run before the guys in the little white coats come to take them away....
