first ill start with a little background. the vette is a 1979 l-82. it had the stock manifold, but an aftermarket holley carb that had seen better days. all of the emissions stuff was torn off and i dont need it so thats not a problem. the cars idle speed would fluctuate a lot and when the engine and outside temperature was hot it would not even idle at all. i decided to replace the carb and manifold. i got the edelbrock performer rpm manifold and the holley street avenger 670 cfm carb. after hooking them up the engine runs a lot better, it will idle in hot weather when warm. :) my problem now is that the idle speed still fluctuates and the car chuggs(it sounds like an old truck chuggin up the road). i adjusted the timing, but it still fluctuates. im thinking its a vaccum leak somewhere. is there an easy way to check if this is so? what should the idle speed in park be? in drive? is there anything else it could be? any help would be greatly appriciated. thanks
thanks, but i got the carb adjusted pretty well. the car is still chugging bad though. it goes but it feels a little sluggish and makes a lot of noise. it sounds like an old truck trying to get up a hill. can anybody explain that?
I just posted a somewhat similar problem with my '74 ... my car isn't quite as noticeable as an 'ol truck going up a hill but it sure sounds like that it's struggling a bit (not smooth) to get up to speed ... if I floor it the secondaries kick in and no "chugging" ... is that the same as nicecurves79??
Lots of things can cause what you've described. Have you checked the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc.? What did you set the timing at? Other possibilities include a cam timing problem, a flat lobe, damaged push rod or spring, or a valve sealing problem.
