Are you running a big cam? If not you should have plenty of vacuum as long as it's properly tuned. Are you having trouble operating vacuum accessories?

Unless it really radical there should be at least 14" or so of vacuum at the manifold. Timing, idle adjust etc check them out and measure the vacuum. If you run a big cam get a vacuum cannister for the accessories. A pump really is not needed.
A pump is not neccessary.. Crane makes a nice vacume cannister for extra storage if you are running a radical cam. I would suggest checking all your hoses, seals and connections.
