Default calling all NCRS or LT-1 guys,PLEASE!!!

I need to know how the factory put the LT-1 stripes on the hood back in 72. Was it paint, decal....? Combo? What were the specs for stripe sizes? Are there decals available, where can you get quality from?

Thanks a bunch,
livin

Hood stripe was laquer paint. Factory boys used a 3 or 4 piece masking. They simply laied it on the hood and shot a little paint on the line! LT-1 was a decal. But remember that a change in the width of the stripe took place in 1970 so all stripes weren't the same. Also it was very normal to see gaps and mis-alined stripes because these were put on quick and many times the masking would shift or didn't match up very well. Thad

Jacob,

Thad (TNT) is right on with his answer...

Very late 1970 LT-1s (approximately the last two or three weeks of production) as well as all 1971 and 1972 Corvettes used a three piece mask that produced equal width stripes. They were applied with a paint gun in either black or white depending upon the exterior color. There is a photo of the process in Corvette News (the issue introducing the 1971 Corvette); the same photo is reproduced in Bizzoco's 1969 Stingray Guidebook. The stripes are occasionally mismatched, but most of the time they are lined up adequately... Original stripes almost always show at least some evidence of the perforations from the mask.

1971 and 1972 LT-1 stripes/labels are pretty straight forward... 1970 gets a bit interesting as there are three possible combinations of stripe paterns/label styles.

While several vendors may offer the stripe masks, I am aware of only one company actually making them. Stencils & Stripes Unlimited does a good job reproducing the paint mask, but I would try to locate a set of NOS GM LT-1 labels (black/white for your 1972) as the kit supplied labels aren't as accurate as I would like to see (they'll work in a pinch though).

You can reach their website at http://www.stencilsandstripes.com.

Good luck with your project!

Regards,
