I am installing new carpet this weekend and it never dawned on me to get prices on the rear storage compartment frame and doors. Went to Zip and saw they where on special for $152 down from $169 :lolg: Thats more than I am paying for the carpeting. Who is the crack addict that is going to pay that? It is a $50 part max! Any one know a place where they sell these things, in pieces if neccessary.
I just took one apart 45 mins ago they are not difficult in the least bit. Its just a frame with 3 doors in it. There is no bottom part or boxes attached or anything.
I just replaced my rear compartment as a unit. The parts alone were 90.00 so instead of doing all the replacing of carpet myself, I bought the assembled unit from Mid-America for 159.00. It is much better made than the original and it's made by Dewitts, the radiator people!
All of the major parts vendors sell individual compartment components as well as the completed assembly.
One of the reasons people spring for the (approx.) $150 pre-assembled unit is the difficulty in removing the old carpet from the doors - they use the glue from hell on those things. I guess it's possible to do it without cracking the doors and/or the plastic trim, but I sure as s*** couldn't. :mad
This is the main reason I bought the assembled unit. It took 3/4 of an hour just to get the carpet off the little center door. Glue from hell is a perfect description for it. And I promise you WILL break the plastin moulding around the door itself. :cry
I've got it apart and the carpet came off easily. So I'm not having the problems some of you had. The fact still remains that 3 doors, a frame, and 3 hinges shouldnt cost $159. Maybe I will go into the rear compartment building business. :smash:
Maybe if the locks, strikers, little rubber bumpers, light, and fibre box with screw kit came with it it would be worth it.
But that according Dr. Rebuild would cost $158 + 47.85 for push button locks, bezels, backs and screws + 43.50 for a molded fibre box +23.90 for center compartment liner + 7.50 for 13 piece screw set + 10.00 for vinyl loops+ 17 for strikers and plates= Grand total $307.75. Now the pain in the butt factor = the price of a new carb or distributor or cam shaft. I was looking at some other interior pieces and those are a fortune as well. :cry
