When I turn my radio on or off the motor runs but the antenna does not come up. I removed it the best I could tonight and when I pulled the mast part off the little white weedwhacker type line is broke. Can I buy a fix-it kit for such a thing?
Also, how do you unplug the unit from the wires, I did not see any type of plug in. It looked like the wires went right into the motor assembly of the unit. I would like to keep the original unit if possible.
As for now I bolted it back in place until I get some advice on how to fix.
Thanks
At one time I repaired those... under warranty!!!!
It's been awhile, but I seem to remember that the electrical wires led away from the antenna to an inline connector.
The most common failure was the thick "fishing line" breaking at the motors take-up spool. Back then, for repair we would order a new
"tape and mast assembly" ... which was the metal antenna part with a new "tape" (the fish-line thingy) while reusing the motor assembly.
I couldn't even begin to guess if those repair parts are still available.
If your 78 is like my 80, then the wires go through a grommet into the rear cabin. The connector is hidden away under the carpet on the antenna side. Just unplug and remove.
I have no idea about the repair of the unit, however.
My "weedwhacker" broke on mine and I spliced back together by using sodering gun tip and melting tips of two pieces at same time then fusing them back together. So far it has held up for 2 months now. Kind of Bubba but depending on brand, you may have hard time finding replacement or you will have to buy brand new.
