Thinking about buying an 82 CE with broken speedometer HELP?
Hi Gang-- I am close to buying an 82 CE in very good condition as described to me. BUT the only draw back is that the SPEEDOMETER is messed up- it reads 39 k miles- The guy tells me that he bought it a short time ago and that the owner who sold it to him told him that it was messed up . He had a mechanic check it out before HE bought it and he thinks the car has about 80 k miles on it by purely guess. Shouldnt the guy selling it have inquired with the previous owner about OLD BILLS to get some sort of ball park figure on just WHAT the actual mileage could be? Do you think it is odd that HE never inquired when HE was buying the car from the supposed original owner. What would you guys do if you were in my boots. Would you just PASS On this whole Iffy thing or would you go ahead and BUY the 82 without any clue to the real miles. PS- He tells me that the car runs great BUT What is going to happen to ME when I may decide to sell the 82 and the NEXT GUY will want ME to show HIM proof of the actual miles.? That is why I am hesitant about "doing this deal" PS The owner is asking about $8500 for the 82.CE PLEASE I need some good advise. My heart says YES but my Brain says NO.

The mileage on the clock is always unreliable unless you've got the sort of substantial documentation that most people don't keep. Personally, on cars as old as these, the milage on the clock seems mostly irrelevant. What counts is what shape it's in. I've never driven a high milage car that you couldn't tell was a high milage car from the wear on everything (the pedals are good indicators) and the "looseness" of the car, the way it drives and sounds. I've driven several high-milage vettes, and they tend to rattle and have steering that is loose and wanders, and the doors tend to have some sag. If everything's tight and you don't see signs of heavy wear on pedals, seats, etc., you're probably looking at a reasonably low milage car.
As far as selling it is concerned, these old cars almost always have "UNKNOWN" on the title for the milage, so I don't think it will handicap you. An intelligent buyer's going to doubt the odometer anyway.

Sounds like a good price even for 80,000 miles. Unless it is really ragged out.
I bought mine 2 years ago with actual milage 96,000 for $14,500, and it was in decent shape.

I bought mine with 35K on it for next to nothing. Can't believe they messed up this car w/ that low mileage. At first i thought the mileage was incorrect but after checking the suspension, engine, transmission.. and so on I actually believe it was correct. Too bad I chopped her up :)
