My rear end needs a rebuild. I am thinking of just buying a rebuilt unit and putting this one on a shelf. The car is a 427-400 HP with the three carbs and air. It has the factory 3:08. What should I replace it with. I am thinking 3:36 - 3:55. Also, where is a good place to buy the rear end. I see Mid America and Ecklers both have them but is there a better source? Thanks.
In order to help you get the best gears for what you want, tell us what you are looking to do with the car. Weekend driver, or do you want to drag it, highway drive???
If you order a rebuilt unit from Eckler's is going to be rebuilt by us. No one sells new rears either b/c no one makes new rear end housings. Our rebuild is $545.99 and $290.99 for a new set of gears. You'll get all new bearings, seal, races, clutch pack, gasket, posi oil and additive. 1 yr warranty. Plus you get 5% off for being a CF member
Dan
The car is used mainly as a week end driver getting together with my other car buddies. It gets a mix of highway and town driving. It only gets about 1000 miles a year on it so mileage is not a major concern. It is all original matching number so I will probably not put it on the strip. What I would like to do is take out the old "pumpkin" with gears and put it on a shelf and install a new or rebuilt pumpkin with gears. What would be the cost of a compete differential with out returning a core, etc. Thanks.
I have essentially the same car (although you didn't mention what transmission - that would be a REAL rare piece with an automatic!) and I have a set of 3.55's in it It's probably my favorite ratio. I've run all kinds of gear sets over the years, and anything lower gets to be a problem for extended cruising. Actually, for what you do, and with the torque of that 427, you'll get better range and mileage if you stay with the 3.08's. For me it's definitely the range that trips me up. Mine gets around 10 mpg and that means only about 150 miles per tank! It's big a** fuel cell time for me.
That core charge might be difficult. See what you can scrounge up used to have Dan go over.
If you want to have a little fun with it every now and again i would go with the 3:55. The difference is about 200 rpms between the two. Finding a core to send in would be a good idea b/c the core charge is $300. Out the door your looking at $795.13 plus shipping and that with you sending in a core. Without a core is $1080.13 plus shipping w/your discount.
