Anyone using the Weld Racing Pro Star XP Wheels on their C-3.....I'm looking at a set of 17"X 8" 5 3/4 bolt pattern 4 1/2 back spacing......will these fit the 1981 C-3 without touching the calipers?.....Somebody told me I may have to grind off some meat on the caliper body.....
Selling my Centerline rims and tires.....I want to use Welds for Racing....

Cappy
Those XPs are for late model cars like my Z28. The larger diameter is needed for late model caliper clearance.
From what I hear, larger rims/tires cause poorer traction and weight more than smaller diameter rims. Some say the lower aspect ratio of 17" tires don't give you enough sidewall for good traction. Fitting 15" rims/slicks on late model cars is a popular mod for the harder-core racers.
So, you maybe headed in the wrong direction. The larger rims look  though!
nunus79,
I was hoping for the best of two worlds.....with larger 17" rims I could have the handling provided by the new larger tires....with top speed ratings around 160+ MPH verses 15" tires rated around 112+ MPH...
With 15" I'd be driving above the rated limits.....handling would not be good as the 17" new tires....I do undersatnd what you're saying about the smaller 15" rims providing better times....however they will be very dangerous at top speeds 160+ MPH......
I wish the tire industry would make a 15" tire capable of tops speeds over 160+ MPH....I'm saving up for the new 454 ci small block engine.... requiring tires to go with the HP.....I'm about third on the waiting list for roll cage.....so I have time to play with Tire/Wheel combo's..... :flag :seeya Cappy
My Draglites have a flat mounting flange.Even with the correct backset the calipers hit the wheel,so I ordered 1" more backset for the rear, and used 1 1/4" wheel adaptors for the caliper clearance.Check my website for pictures.

The Money Pit,
Looking at your set up......and BTW it looks great....Do you think if you trimmed some of the caliper....say 1/4 inch off ....maybe the rim would clear?....without using the spacer....I race....and don't trust spacers. :flag :seeya Cappy

Re: Weld Racing Pro Star XP Wheels???? (8T1-7T9 BIONIC VETTE)
Cappy the mounting flange on the wheels are flat.No amount of trimming would solve the interferance with the caliper. At the minimum you'd need 1/2" spacers and longer studs.I opted for wheel adapters made by Vette Brakes. These are plenty strong, though not a race car,I push quite a bit more torque than the average Vette, and have had no problems with them what so ever.
Re: Weld Racing Pro Star XP Wheels???? (Intimidator454)
Hey Cappy, how much did the body kit cost you? I have the front spoiler like yours and I want the side and rear skirts to match. I've seen some different prices, just curious as to what you paid.
Re: Weld Racing Pro Star XP Wheels???? (SCVetteGuy)
I bought the whole kit from Eckler's.....I think I paid about $1500.00 for the kit....the front spoiler is special made for this car...the Eckler front spoiler is very narrow in the mouth...so I had the front scoop made wider and lower to the ground. :flag :seeya Cappy
Re: Weld Racing Pro Star XP Wheels???? (SCVetteGuy)
Thank you for the compliment SCVetteGuy,
She's also a very fast naturally aspirated Small Block with A/C....and look fast extra weight on the sides, front, and rear. With a roll cage it will weigh even more.
I think if I removed all the look fast stuff...I'd probably gain more speed and better ET's through the quarter :D :flag :seeya Cappy
Re: Weld Racing Pro Star XP Wheels???? (8T1-7T9 BIONIC VETTE)
Yeah I can tell she's fast, running 11 secs. Wish mine could do that, but sadly it can't. :cry Sadly I don't have enough money for what I want!!! But man you got A/C too!!! I wish I had that!!!
Did you tint your windows? and do you have any more pics I could see?
Re: Weld Racing Pro Star XP Wheels???? (DMONSVETTE)
DMONSVETTE,
Cool your jets......I'm looking at various wheels now since it's obvious Weld wheels will not work on my car without spacers.....
I went to "Revolution" today and they have a nice assortment of Boyd Coddington's.....However the place was packed .....I told the guy I'd come back later when we have time to try different wheel/tire combo's.....I tried a set there before, and it took them hours just to get the tire on to the wheel.... it was soooo wide...then when they mounted to the car.... I had about 1/8th of an inch clearance to rear spring....one hard bump and it would have gouged the rim or broke the fiberglass spring... :eek
Long day tomorrow.....Parade at 9:00 am I'm cooking a Louisiana Turkey stuffed with Duck and spices for Mothers day party .....then over to Windward mall for car show.....Hope I see you there.... :flag :seeya Cappy
