what can i use to clean out the inside of my oil pan? brake cleaner? my timing chain guide broke into a thousand pieces and i want to make sure i get it all out of the pan before i put it back. i know brake cleaner will get the job done, but i'm not sure if it will have a negative effect once the pan goes back on and is full of oil. thanks.
Hey Brendan,
If you're talking about cleaning the pan without dropping it all the way out of the car, then a couple cans of brake clean will probably flush it out ok before you reassemble it. It shouldn't have any adverse affect after reassembley.
What part of Vancouver are you in? I've spent a little time up there in the past, always had fun!
Greg
Brake cleaner should be fine. The ideal stuff is Berryman's B12 Carb cleaner and parts cleaner...there should be a 1 pint can available at your local parts store...you don't need the spray can just the 12 fluid oz liquid to pour in there and swish around. What's left will evaporate, though I would recommend rinsing with water cause when it evaporates it will leave a thin residue...but if you rinse it out with a water hose then it will dry squeeky clean.
If the pan is out of the car then any kinda degreaser will work, even dishwashing detergent. Just wash it up real good with a brush and rinse with water. Blow dry with compressed air is best but you could also wipe it out with a clean rag. Blow drying will insure that there is no fibers from rag left behind.
