On a Vette are they the same as heater hoses? I am seriously considering bypassing the heater core as I am missing the pipe that runs under the A/C compressor and I am seeing too many places where they can chaffe.
I am concerned about plugging holes in the Stewart pump I got. I read a post on thier Q&A forum that states it is ok to eliminate the bypass hose if you are running a drilled t-stat, which I am. I just want to make sure that plugging the heater hose pipe would be OK. I don't want to run a hose from the pump up to the manifold because that is just one more hose that can blow. :mad
They call it waterpump bypass hose, in reality it's a closed thermostat bypass hose, IF there is a closed heater core, or even if the heater water valve is open....most cars have them some SB chevy's have them too, of one variety or another....thing is, you have to keep water circulating in the block all the time the engine is running, even IF it's within the block and not through any other device (radiator, heater core) as engine heating is mostly in the heads, and little in the block, especially around the exhaust valves....so cooler water needs be there all the time, or steam pockets form....
Dodge is famous for a hooked rather large hose from pump to manifold...
Pontiac had it cast into the manifold with a 1/2 inch passage and a gasket into the back of the water pump housing...there are tons of other engines with similar arrangements including a stupid one,....I forget the brand, but the hose was about 2" long between the manifold under the t-stat, and the back of the water pump....allmost impossible to change without doing the water pump housing/timing chain cover at the same time.....a simple wonderful little contrivance that stayed in production for about 20 years or so.....;-(((
I think I want to put a 3/8 line in the back of my intake manifold like edelbrock has machines, and put it to the water pump/heater line....extra circulation path....not much releif being only a 1/4 diameter tube in spots, but I think I will give it a shot....
I plugged mine on my BB, since then the engine definately runs cooler. I was told the bypass hose helps in circulating water in the block, but once the stat is open the cooled water from the pump goes right into the intake and back to the radiator, so that cooled water never sees the motor. I too have a stewart water pump and a shaw\stewart 160 degree stat with holes factory drilled in it. My motor runs very cool even in hot weather and hard running.
sounds more like it should be called a T-stat by pass hose. My car doesn't even have one. The only other fitting on the pump that I have besides the rad hoses is a return from the heater core.
Think there would be any detriment to plugging the hole in the pump and the manifold? I'd run an extra hose straight from one to the other, but I figure the few hoses, the less chance of bursting one. :smash:
