While trying to find every little possible thing to do to get ready for the engine install when it arrives I noticed a possible problem with my water pump. It's an aluminum Edelbrock pump that I bought unused off of eBay. Anywho, I bolted up the pulley to the pump and spun it. I noticed that if you look at it from the side (looking into the belt grooves) you can see it wobble a little. From the naked eye it seems like a lot of wobble but I just measured it and it's just less than 1/16 of an inch. Is that an acceptable amount of wobble or does it need to be perfectly true?
It might last forever, or it might fail at any time. With the engine out, why take a chance with a relative inexpensive component. Any wobble would indicate a bearing, shaft or pulley fault.
Just imagine how disappointed (or worse) you would be after all the effort involved with an engine install, and then have the water pump fail.
The pump can easily be rebuilt. Don't take a chance.
That is a lot of run out. Replace it with a NEW one. Over the counter rebuilds are junk. You are lucky if the last a year. It's the grease that make the difference. There was a thread on NCRS about that. Krytox grease or William Nye cost big buck.. rebuilders won't use it. Only the cheapest will do. Not for me....
