I have two aluminum SBC water pumps. They're both short neck, so I can use either one. One is used, and has a larger shaft than the other one, which is new. Does the shaft size make a big difference, or should I just use the new one?
Your pulleys should have a hole sized for a 3/4th inch diameter shaft. You will not be happy with the results of using a 5/8ths shaft with a 3/4 inch pulley.
Don't forget that small block Corvette water pumps are a differnt length from a standard short water pump
