I HAVE TO REBUILD MY 427 AND WAS EXPLORING THE POSSIBILITY OF GOING WITH ONE OF THE ROTATING STROKER ASSEMBLIES AVAILABLE FROM FLATLANDER. THIS WOULD BE A 425 STROKE CRANK, 6.385 RODS AND FLAT TOP PISTONS.
HAS ANYONE TRIED THIS COMBO? WHAT WAS THE RESULT IN REGARDS RELIABLITY ISSUES? AND PERFORMANCE WISE, HOW MUCH INCREASE IN POWER WAS ACHIEVED?
I would go for It. Generally what Ive been told from engine builders on big blocks is going from a 427 to a 454 is around 30HP If all stays the same. So I would think a 454 to a 489 would be 30+HP and that much TQ.
It makes a 489 or a 496 depending on bore. It's a very reliable combo and make a great street engine. You need to start thinking about good heads by the time you get around 500". It takes a GREAT set of ovals to make power, stock rectangular ports will act like oval ports on a 427 due to the size. Anything better is just more icing on the cake and will really make it come alive.
Cam size is the same deal. You gotta think larger than normal. An engine this big is out of the norm for what most cam recommendations are made for.
You might want to use another block if yours is the original and it does not have the rod notches at the bottom of the bore. It will take some grinding and even a 454 type one might need a little, but either wat it can be done in little time.
Find out how it's balanced. If externally balanced you will need a new flywheel and balancer.
Otherwise, it's a great way to make well over 600 pump gas HP.
