my recently aquired 1973 L82 arrived with a fairly new starter. When the engine is cold, it turns the engine over easily. Once the engine is warm; the starter barely can turn the engine over. I already eliminated the battery as the problem.
Did the L82 have a different - maybe more powerful - starter than the base engine?
Re: Does L82 have different starter than L48? (Mike Mercury)
Take your starter to a rebuilder or a marine shop and NOT the auto parts store to have it tested. Make SURE the original heat shield is on the starter at the end brace. It is a small thing but deflects hot air away from the solenoid and makes all the difference with hot starting. If you have headers you may need to get one of the aftermarket pieces for more heat shielding. Good luck.

Almost all starters look alike but.... Some are considered "light duty", others are "heavy duty." L-48 and L-82 should be the same. Rebuilders sometimes (OK... actually alot of the time) get things all mixed up and you end up with a light duty starter because it fits a chevy, (The old "parts is parts syndrome"). Heavy duty units have four pole windings and four brushes while light duty only have two poles and two brushes.... However.... all of the previous post suggestions shoul be looked at also.
