Speedometer just stopped working today... Help!

Speedometer just stopped working today... Help!
I got in my car this morning and The speedometer just refused to work, as well as the odometer and the trip meter. Any suggestions guys?

The most likely culprit is your speedo cable. If you have cruise control, it might be the cable that goes from the trans to the transducer. Otherwise, the easiest thing to do is go underneath the car and pull the cable off the tranny and pull it out of the sheath to see if it is broken.

If it does turn out to be the speedometer Cable, what needs to be done to replace the cable? Would I need to remove the dash? Thanks.

If it's anything like mine, just wait a week or two (maybe a month or two) and it'll start working again :D Seriously, if it's the cable, I believe you'll need to get behind the dash (may have to remove it for clearance) to put a new one in. Also, there may be more than one cable section, or at least that appears to be the case on my car, though I haven't replaced the cable yet with the one I bought a couple years back, so I'm not positive :rolleyes:

Mine went out after having some work done on the car. The cable was somehow knocked out of place and ended up resting on either the header collector or the exhaust pipe and after I drove it away it melted the coating. That was all it took to fry it.
I think the 10-15 MPH variation is caused by the little gear having way too much play in it, probably from wear.
