Default FLOWMASTER ? ON 80 VETTE

Anyone out there running 40 flowmaster on there vette?
i was thinking of adding on my vette ,but as you all know running the the pipe tot he rear looks like it will be a very custum job. if anyone has pics please post them. i would like to use the rear stock muffler hangers . to hook up the muffles i have header some where , the last time i had the headers on itlooked like i would have to heat and bend the headers to clear the floor and trans x member.

i want to add tho that although it sounds great they have that very anoying popping sound after downshifting as the revs come down...
i am told that flowmasters are notorious for this...and because of this i wouldnt buy them again...
by the way i am also running 2-1/2" pipe all the way...

I have an 81 Vette that is pretty much stock.. For a while I had the stock exhaust system with the cat but I put on flowmaster mufflers. When I bought them About 4 years ago there weren't called 40's or 50's they were just two chamber and three chamber. I got the two chamber becuase I had them on a Chevelle I had and liked them. The car was still quiet for my taste, unless you stood right by the back of the car. Just last week I went to a true daul sysytem with no cat and kept the mufflers. I am still using the exhaust manifolds, and the sound is great. Low rumble at an idle but when you get on it WOW. I like it. It sound good to me but my father says it's to loud for him. I think It sounds like a sports car should sound. My Vette is an auto so I guess I wouldn't here the popping on deceleration. I love the exhaust system, and would highly recomend it.

The Flowmaster Deltaflow 40's fit nicely under my '80 Vette.

SIGNGUY, my car does not make a "popping sound" when decellerating, even if I manually downshift my auto. Maybe it's something other than your mufflers causing it. Is your AIR system functional? I've heard of failed air diverter valves causing a popping exhaust sound.!?! Maybe raw gas is somehow reaching the exhaust during decelleration!?! I dunno.

I have 2 chamber flowmaster 40s attached to 2.5" tubes to 1 5/8" hooker headers with 3" collectors on my 79. I love it and it deffinately wakes the car up a lot. I wouldn't trade my setup on my car for any other brands.

Edit I have true duals too.

I had my exhaust system changed a couple months ago. I went from stock to true 2 1/2 duals, no cat, with Flowmaster Deltaflow 40's. I love this set up. I too asked the forum members their recommendations and decided on this and am very happy that I did. I do not have any popping sounds period. Good luck on your decision. :flag

when i asked here on the forum about it the majority of the replies that i got said thats what the sound was...people that had owned them before said they experienced the same thing and so did my mechanic, a friend and fellow hot rodder...the local muffler shop told me the same thing as well...
i dont have an AIR pump or any other type of smog stuff on my car...
it has been stripped of all of it and is set up like the "good ol days" and EVERYTHING under my hood is brand new except for the block...

if it isnt the flowmasters...i would LOVE to find out what it is...i hate it...
it is kind of a backfiring sound that i assume all engines do except the mufflers are suppose to quiet it...
dont get me wrong, it isnt a terrible backfiring and it dosnt do it the whole time the engine is winding down, just at a cetain point in the deceleration...
otherwise the engine runs flawlessly and i love it! :yesnod:

I have Hedman headers, 2.5" true duals, X-pipe, and Flowmaster 40's on my '77 and I'm happy with the system. The X-pipe does a good job on getting rid of the resonance, etc. but it also quites the sound a little. Personally, I'd like it even louder and that's why I'm going to open sidepipes eventually
