I just replaced the oil pan gasket on my 71 small block. I took care of it while I was doing some engine upgrades. Engine runs great but pan is leaking from oil seal, under the timing cover. My mehtod was to use black Permatex between the gasket and the pan. I then placed the pan into position and torqed to half the spec. Several hours later I came back and torqed to full spec. Somehow I got a leaker. Any suggestions/experience on type of sealant or method of installation before I do this again. Someone told me to Permatex the front and rear oil seals to the block before installing the pan. another suggestion was to use 3M super weatherstrip adhesive and clear silicone between the panb and gasket and between the gasket and the block.
I always permatex'ed the gasket to the block, then installed the pan with another layer of permatex. then torqued it to full torque. same for the front and rear seals.
I'm not sure weatherstrip gasket sealer will hold up to the heat.
sure you got the right gasket?? there is a thick and thin front oil pan seal and many kits have the thin one and you might need the thicker one, worth a check maybe.
Not sure which one I have. First gasket kit was GM; spec'd out for my motor (71LT-1). Second kit, not yet installed, is a Fel-Pro. They are both the same size. How thick should the oil seal gaskets be? I think my problem was movement of the gasket while trying to angle the pan between the block and steering rig. May not have seated properly?
