Default What is wrong with this picture?

I keep talking about my RHD conversion. It used to be law that we had to convert to RHD. Now only cars under 25 years have to be converted.
So have a look at what we had to do to drive a Vette here in OZ
There was an American called Jim out here for our National Convention over Easter. He said we were the most dedicated Corvette owners he knew because we have to pay for our cars 3 times over to drive them!
Buy the car.
Ship and pay duties.
Convert to RHD.
He's right!

Sorry Folks Due to technical difficulties I have been unable to show the picture here.
Link directly to the picture I wanted to show is: http://www.chevcarclubvic.org.au/vic...8_interior.jpg
or to a set of pictures is: http://www.chevcarclubvic.org.au/vic...eature_car.htm

Can anyone tell me why I cannot show the picture here?
Is it because the string is too long?
And any time I try to use help it comes up with Error! Invalid help topic (close)

Nice car. Nice job.

I see you even had to put a passenger's side mirror on ... er... driver's side mirror ... er... ouch, my head hurts

Don't know why you can't post the pic. I'll give it a shot...

Have always wondered why the handfull (what is it about 3 or 4) that have RHD does not convert to match the rest of the world. It would lower the cost of their cars, no more conversons, and make the ones they produce easier to sell overseas.

I like the way you reversed the HVAC and the ashtray and also swaped the shifter and the shifter pattern. By the way, like the 5-speed.

Err I think you will find its a few more than that! Apart from Australia, New Zealand, UK and Japan you also have places like India Pakistan etc. I cant remember them all but somebody listed them a while back and its significantly more than 3 or 4. :steering:

Boy, that list sure gives you an idea of the influence of the British Empire on the world! I've always wanted to try it, but not with my car :nono: Maybe a rental though...

Beautiful interior! Still looks freaky though. I have driven in England and Japan. Switching to the left side of the road requires constant attention but you get used to it after awhile. Its just walking across the road that will kill yah. Never could make myself look right instead of left before I crossed.

I stand corrected. If the list is accurate then there are 73 countries that drive on the left. My apologies.

If you look at the list, 51 of the are island nations (some with populations as small as a few hundred), 13 are in Africa (former British rule), and 2 are on the Indian border. The major areas are UK/Ireland, Australia/NZ, Japan, Inda/Pakistan.

Guess I should have said that there are few auto producing countries that still use RHD. :)

:yesnod: I spend several weeks in Ireland every summer. You get used to it fairly quickly, though the roundabouts can still drive you nuts (the Irish tend to play kind of fast & loose with the conventions for using a roundabout). What I don't understand is why Australia forces the conversions. Doesn't seem that difficult or dangerous to drive a LHD car on the left (I'm pretty sure Ireland & England, for instance, doesn't force owners to convert, and I know for darned sure that the US doesn't force RHD cars to be converted).

When I would come up to a rounabout I would just keep saying to myself. Go left, go left, go left. Roundabouts were the greatest when you are in another country. You never missed your turn--just keep going around again.

Part of the reason is to protect our own car industry. It forces us to buy locally made vehicles or vehicles made for RHD. GM(Holden), Ford, Toyota, Mitsubishi make cars here and all the Japanese makers export to us. We also get Most of the European and some of the asian marques.
Holden is going great guns. Apart from being chosen as the model for all GM companies due to our effiencies, the Holden Monaro is now being sold to the US as a Pontiac GTO and to Saudi as a Chevy Lumina SS.
So we can produce LHD and RHD.
The Mercury Capri was also made in OZ but it was a piece of @#$%

Actually it's not that hard driving on the left, but after spending over a year in the Caymans I came back and had a hard time adjusting to driving back on the right, kept pulling out into the wrong lane. I got plenty of complimentary hand signals the first week or so :jester

Dawg,
You've got it wrong, we drive on the RIGHT side of the car, it's you guys who've got it wrong!. I'll explain it in more detail at Flagstaff on June 22, but it might take a beer or two. Make sure you.ve got a designated driver to get you home.

Regards from Down Under

Steve,
Sorry about the long lead time on the reply, I have been "off Forum".
Are you asking about the console only or the full conversion?
I did the full conversion myself including fabricating the pedal box, Rack mount, Heater and demist inversion, 5 speed and console. the instruments(speedo,Tach) are cut out of the dash and a similar piece is removed from the passenger side. They are then swapped and then glassed back in and recovered.
Most conversions use a mirror image firewall and the original pedalbox but I wanted a flat firewall for room for the BB.
Oh yeah, I also rewired the full loom to suit.
The console started out as a standard piece and I cut out the shift plate to make way for the shifter . Manufactured a new shift plate for the left side with the 5 Sp pattern. Swapped the heater and Ashtray over as the lid of the ashtray would now slide into the shifter. Used a low temp alloy for welding the pot metal and had eveything rechromed and painted to finish it off.
Hope thats the info you are after!
There are more pictures on the link (see the original post) you can send to your Irish buddies
James
