This has been batted around a bit but I wanted to see if I could get some detailed opinions and info of what you guys went with and why. I am planning on purchasing a brake package that includes mstr cyl and loaded calipers. I am looking at both VB&P and Muskegon. I am wandering which is the best package to consider. Is it worth the extra money for O-ring calipers? Do I need the extreme duty calipers that VB&P offer? Or would a standard replacement be the way to go? Origionally I was convinced that I had to have the best of the best which is what I guess the VB&P extreme calipers are. Now the more practical side in me is thinking that this is a weekend cruiser that may see and autoX once or twice a year but I want good performing brakes.
What do you guys suggest, and why?
Sorry this sounds like an essay question from a college exam.
I love spending other peoples money. :D Have you completed a cost comparison of the two packages your looking at vs Force 10 and a Hydra-boost? There was a thread about Force 10 available though a vendor for ~$600. I'm guessing that was for a pair.
Time to do some detailed cost estimate spreadsheets if you haven't yet . . . then the question may answer itself.
Didn't see your name on the carbon fiber halfshaft group purchase. :p: :p:
That's the thread that a vendor mentioned Force 10 brakes.
Thanks I will check it out. $600 kinda hurts though.... :cry
Wade
How much were you planning on spending with VBP? Some slotted rotors and aluminum calipers would sure look cool and reduce weight. What size/style of wheels are you going to go with? If your staying with Rallys or the slotted Vette wheels, then no need spending money on pretty hardware. :p: :p: :p:
Your car is awesome, don't hold back now!
I know I don't want to cheap out nowt I just wander what would be over kill for what I am going to do with my car. I do plan on 17" rims and performance tires. I have the VB&P performance plus suspension and I already have new rotors on therear that were installed by Bair's when I had the T\A's rebuilt. You are right slotted rotors would look  but I think itwould look funny with those on the front and OEM's on the rear. Not to mention explaining to the wife why I need to replace the rear rotors again :boxing.
Hi Wade,
I have the o-rings in my 74 for several years now and no trouble. Since there isn't a spring behind pistons, if your rotors are out of round the pistons won't be moving in and out sucking air into the calipers. Good luck.
Tom
PS. I got the hoods home without any problems. :seeya
Thanks Tom good to hear from you. I hope the weather for the rest of your visit was better than the day you were in Charlotte.
Did you rebuild your own calipers with an Oring piston package or did you buy new Oring calipers? Since I have only driven my car an hour since I have owned it I can't remember any problems with the breaks, i.e. leaking or anything like that. I think that I can turn the front rotors and they will be fine. As I said before the rear rotors are new. The front calipers were pretty clean but the rears were very rusty. I guess now I am wandering if I should look at what a lot of other people have done and rebuild what I have with an Oring piston kit and remove the springs.
Glad to hear that you made it home Ok. Hope those hoods work out for you.
IMHO.
For a weekend cruiser: Rebuild your calipers with Zero Tolerance alum pistons and O rings. You must have stainless sleeves for the O rings to be fully effective. I don't have anything against VB O rings. I just prefer the ZT approach since it includes a billet caliper piston that is less likely to wobble in the sleeve.
Get high quality brake pads. I like Performance Friction Z pads. Shim your rotors for 0 runout. Install braided hose brake lines. Completely flush brake fluid and replace with DOT 3 or DOT 4. I like Castrol Low Moisture fluid. This combo won't break your brakes or your wallet.
For top of the line: Hydroboost, lightweight calipers like Force 10 or Wilwood. Slotted rotors with matched pads. Install proportioning valve. Other items from above.
Baer is to introduce their Eradispeed calipers and rotors for C3s this Fall. My C5 friends say they are terrific.
There is a guy in FL (caliper2000??) who advertises in the NCRS driveline, he offers a nice looking billet o-ring piston with a sleeved caliper at a reasonable cost. On the other hand there is (or was) a guy in FL ripping off Vette owners on sleeved calipers so do some homework BEFORE you buy!!
