Areas to check for rust around the windshield frame (birdcage) would be to remove the exterior stainless trim. You could also remove the interior trim.
Without any disassembly look very carefully around the vin tag area for rust. I'm also told in real bad cases if you place a white cloth on the drivers side floor and open and close the door smartly you will see flakes of rust land on the cloth.

Or in my case, I just removed the kickpanel and saw it all piled up in the cavity where a speaker could go. :(
