Front carpet replacement
Basically, you want to remove the seats, center seat belt latches, center console (yep, all of it), kick panels, and sill plates. There should also be two plastic plates under the seats that have to come out. I pulled the lower dash panel from the passenger side as well.
Before I started with the carpet, I put down a layer of EZ Cool insulation. Aluminum foil on both sides, closed cell foam in the middle. Neat stuff, it goes together with aluminum tape. I used one big piece on the tunnel and cut pieces to fit as necessary for the footwells. Remember to cut holes for the seats and seat belt latches. Also you have to fit it around the mounting flanges for the center console.
Once the insulation was in place, I test fitted the carpet. Once it was where it had to be, then (and only then) did I start cutting it. Same holes need to be cut in the carpet as for the insulation... on the front of the seats, I cut little flaps in the carpet the way the factory did it. Make sure you have enough carpet on the sides for the sill plate to retain it... I'm a bit "iffy" on the passenger side in this regard.
My carpet wasn't a perfect fit, but it's close enough for a driver. It was a front only carpet kit that I bought on Ebay.
IMO, insulation is absolutely necessary. I (and many others here) used Reflectix brand from Lowe's - it works great as both a sound and heat barrier and is much less expensive than the pre-cut stuff.
