diff fluid change
I pulled drain plug out of the side of my differential and nothin came out. I stuck my pinky and found fluid. Should fluid have drained out? I purchased a sucker and I'm getting ready to start pulling the rest of the fluid out. I don't see how two quarts could be in there and not come out of the side drain. Boy, the smell. I purchased 80W-90W Pennsoil. I think it's GL-5 spec and the bottle says no additive required. Can anyone answer the if fluid should have come out of the side drain plug? Any problems with the Pennsoil? Should I need additive? Boy, the Diff. sticks.

Re: diff fluid change (dlw)
I pulled one guart out. Man the wife Pizzed, as I snuck out a kitchen bowl and measured. I'll add a little less than two quarts, drive it and see if this stuff works without the addititive as suggested. If it makes noise, I'll get some additive. Thanks dlw.
One more question, why does the tag on the differential say add limited-slip diff. fluid only and not mention the addition off posi additive?
Nothing will come out because you have to fill it to the level of the hole.:reddevil:
You will need to suck all the old fluid out.:bb:
Buy a suction pump. About $15- $20.
Suck all the old oil out (or most of it).
You now need to get your new fluid AND ADDITIVE in. I set up a long line with a bottle and allowed gravity to allow the fluid (slow and thick oil) to go down the tube into the diff.
Put the ADDITIVE in first. Yes you MUST use the GM additive. :chevy:
Fill the diff till it starts to seep out of the hole.
Tighten up the diff filler bolt and head for a carpark. Do a number of figure 8s at slow speed to mix it all up and ensure all slips smoothly.:steering:
Then dont touch the damn thing for a couple of years (unless you have a leak !!):hurray:

positraction = limited slip differential. I thought it was a GM trademark name, but heard different stories. Suffice it to say they are the same thing, like your tissue dispenser has a label that says, "fill with Kleenex only", and doesnt say anything about "Tissue" :) MJ
I use Pennzoil myself. And, yes you need to add the additive. The additive is very thick, so what I did was pour just a little out of each quart bottle then squirted half of the additive into each bottle and shook them up to mix the additive before I pumped the oil into the differential. This will save a lot of worry about it getting mixed up...which I figure will take about 5 miles, especially if the additive is coating the case just below the fill hole.

Re: diff fluid change (Rockn-Roll)
Drove the car yesterday throught the Smokies, 5000 ft up and back to test the rear-end, fluid change did wonders. No noticeable jerks or clunks, she's runnin' smooth. Thanks guys.
BTW, saw 2 C-5's on the way and neither waved back. :banghead: :banghead:
