Default What do you do about...

The gas smell of the exhaust on car without cats? The exhaust is pretty strong at idle. The carb is not rich. The plugs are always clean and I have no black smoke. It is not a tune problem . All of the cars without cats seem to have this smell to one degree or another. I run Amoco premiun as that is the only gas that comes close to not pinging But it smells the worst... Texaco 93 has alomst no smell but it pings a 1/3 throttle. Anyone else have thids problem?

In all honesty it's a EPA type programme to convince us somehow we need cat converters...truth be known, some decades ago, with leaded gas, and nice high octane that regular could/did support 10.5 compression ratio....
the exhause did not smell all that badly...much more pleasant that today's noxious odors....my nose tells me the truth every time....

Yeah... The cars of the 60's and early 70's didn't smell like they do now. Virtually every car at the old town cruise really puts out the odors.

I wonder if any of that is caused by lack of lead or the weird additives in the gas we burn today?
