Braided hoses.... how to help pls
I took off the old hard line that was kinked and forgot to crimp the hose going into the pump, so I got fuel all over the front suspension, the garage floor, and me. I was getting frustrated so I yelled at the gas that was pouring out of the hole. :mad My neighbor came running over thinking that something was wrong. Please help so that she won't think that I'm insane. :crazy:





Assembly Instructions
Swivel-Seal Hose Ends with Perform-O-Flex or Auto-Flex Hose
1. Cut the hose to the required length.
a) Measure distance between ports or adapter fittings along the path that the hose run will follow — allowing for bend radius, hose end length and offset to obtain length and hose required.
b) Cut the hose square with a radiac wheel or a sharp 32 teeth per inch hacksaw blade. It is necessary to wrap it tightly with electrical or masking tape before cutting and to cut through the tape. This helps to prevent the stainless wire braid from fraying.
c) Trim any frayed end of the braid with a sharp pair of metal snips or diagonal cutters and remove the tape.
Place the socket in a vise and insert the end of the hose into the socket until the hose butts against the bottom of the threads provided for the cutter.
2. Gently pull the hose back until there is a 1/16" to 1/8" gap between the end of the hose and the bottom of socket — mark hose at bottom of socket with a felt pen so that you can detect any tendency of the hose to be pushed out as you complete the assembly.
3. Lubricate the inside of the hose, the cutter threads and the socket threads with Earl's assembly lube or engine oil. Place the nipple in a vise.
4. Push the hose and the socket onto the nipple until the socket threads can be started on the cutter. Start the threads and go as far as you can by hand. Depending on the size of the hose, some force may be necessary in this part of the operation.
5. To complete the assembly it doesn't matter whether the nipple or the socket is held in the vise. Holding one or the other in the vise and using a suitable wrench on the other, tighten the socket onto the cutter threads until the socket is within .060" of bottoming on the nipple. Do not use an adjustable or over-size wrench or you will damage either the nipple or the socket.
6. Check the mark that you made on the hose in Step 2. If the hose has backed more than about 1/16" out of the socket as you assembled it, curse and return to Step 3.
7. Clean the hose and the hose ends with Clean solvent.
8. Pressure check the assembly before installation. Before letting the assembly out of your sight, check the assembly by running the system at full pressure while you observe the hose, hose ends, and adapters for leaks.

I think I used a 1/8th inch screw driver to push all the SS braids into the fitting.....NO do not remove the braided part from the hose to install.

Anyhow, rant done with, you are on the right track. Don't cut off the steel, just patience, strength, patience. Good luck! :cheers:
1) Use a Dremel to cut the hose. A dull hack saw makes a mess of the braided wires, even with very tight tape wrapped around it.
2) Use Vice-grips to pinch off a fuel line so that it doesn't pour gas all over the garage floor, the front end of your car, and yourself.
3) Make sure to remove the Vice-grips from the fuel line before you try to start the car. (It took me a few minutes of cranking over to figure that one out....) :smash:
4) If the old fuel line was kinked so that it was restricting fuel flow, the new one will flow MUCH better, so it's going to run very rich until you adjust the carb.

I always wrap black electriacl tape around the place to be cut. I then cut if off with a high speed cut off blade in my air tool, I them carefully remove the tap so as not to disturb the cut end, grease it well, grease the fitting and while holding the line in a vise with only about 1 to 2 inches sticking out work the red end over the braid. I then grease the threads well and screw it to gether. Once you start assebling you take the red end over the hose, protect it with a rag or rubber inserts over the jaws of the vise and while holding he braided line from getting pushed out of the red end slowly tighten the blue nut, or end. I always make sure to use lots of grease to revent galling of the aluminum fittings.
