79 vette- 2 problems- need assistance
I received my 79 with two problems that I will try to troubleshoot. I need to know if there are common problems with:
1) wiper motor does not work- all wires are connected. I plan to check the fuse first. Any ideas???
2) Headlights only work when you pull the headlight switch AND pull the **** under the dash. Is this normal operation???
Thanks.....Tony
2) Nope, headlights should pop up when you pull the light switch...........the small **** on underside of dash is for emergency opening of headlights..........you must have leaks in the headlight vacuum system, and need to do some trouble shooting.
Wiper motor is probably 1) not grounded, or 2) some wires not connected (or broken)
Vacume leak somewhere....Check the two vacume hoes attached to the light switch. It seems that that is where the trouble is and the switch not opening the vacume. These can be easily knocked out if someone was under the dash messing around. While you are checking that, check the wiper switch right above it, while you are there... Good Luck!
"Bubba" could have also not connected the vacume lines behind the switch correctly, same goes for the wiper switch.

As for the wipers, The wires are connected and the ground was good. I do hear a funny clicking(possibly a relay of some sort) near the radio when I put the wiper switch to the washer selection. I could not get the motor to spin. After I checked things I took the wiper motor off the car and hooked it directly to a battery and still no movement. I took a wiper motor from a 69 vette that was laying around and put that directly to a battery and it worked. I tried to plug the 69 wiper motor onto my 79. The connections were similar so I gave it a shot. It just stayed on constantly so I don't believe that they were compatible. Does anybody know any other way to test the wiper motor??? Help!!!
As far as the other motor not turning off you MIGHT possibly have a switch problem. I don't have any manuals in front of me, but with a test light or volt meter, check to see if one of the wires has power going to it that corresponds with switch position. 68-71 used a relay. Just searching on ZIP, I didn't see a relay listed for 79's. So you are correct, they must be different electrically. If you've got power going to the motor when the switch is on, your motor must be bad.
A local store should sell rebuilts for about $50.
