i went for a dyno today at Agostino Racing Engines..i wanted to see if the car was tuned well by my mechanic and i wanted to see how much power i got from uncapping the JCL's...
the car is tuned perfectly..they said there was no point changing anything...kudos to my mechanic..
as for the baffles..last year i pulled at the wheels 320hp and 395 torque...today with the baffles uncapped i went 350hp and 410 torque...not a bad gain for a few hours work..i am very pleased...
That's about the same percentage gain I got from un-capping the JCL's. I also liked the deeper rumble of the uncapped pipes. At 350rwhp you are the same as my ZO6; but you have significantly more torque, if more torque actually matters. Some say it does :D
You've got one gorgeous car! That should be worth about an extra 150hp. I don't think many folk would doubt you if you claimed 500rwhp.

With numbers like that it looks like my caps are coming off shortly! How was the sound difference? I think I heard there is only a 4db increase.
it is louder but not overbearing...if you liked the sound of the baffles when you first started your car after the install, then you will like this too.. just a more aggressive sound...

Yes, there is no reason to run them capped up, IMHO. I got the info from Chuck on what to do. It's a simple job. I never ran mine capped up, in fact. I can tell you that I could not tell any difference in performance (on my mild motor) b/w open pipes and uncapped JCL baffles.
IMHO, WOT its almost as loud as open pipes. Not quite (as it literally would hurt my ears open...and I'm only 35 ), but its close. However, cruise and idle it just sounds really good and not obnoxious at all.
You will be very pleased. Well worth the time and effort.
<---anxiously awaiting parts to increase my rwhp by 80+ :D
I agree with Chuck. 1bad69 has an absolutely gorgeous car. Black when it is clean is just awesome. I hope mine looks as good with an L88 hood!
Believe me, there is a sound difference between open pipes and the uncapped baffles at WOT. When I did the dyno run in the shop with open pipes it was like sticking an awl in each ear. Real pain! With the uncapped baffles I was able to cover my ears with my hands to avoid the pain. Power wise, there was virtually no difference between open pipes and un-capped baffles. Roughly 480rwhp either way.
It would be a big mistake for any of you to think that the un capped baffles sound tame at WOT. It has a very serious "DON'T MESS WITH ME" scream that will back just about anything on the road into a corner.
I'm sure in a shop on a dyno it DOES indeed make your ears really hurt with the open pipes. Shoot, my SBF was unbearable like that when I tried it one day.
Out on the road, though, it really didn't seem to be a big difference at WOT, but there _is_ a difference. Also, my motor is a lot tamer than yours, so I'm sure that has some effect. I shift at 5500, you shift at 7000. :)
As a matter of fact, I would kill to own at least one car that sounded like that at WOT. It would cause the average car driver to have a heart attack. :)
WA 2 FST- I've ridden in and heard Chuck's L-88. The L-88 with capped baffles is still really loud, idles at least 3x as loud as my L-48 w/ duals. On the freeway, exhaust is prevalent over any road noise. I have not ridden in it since he uncapped the baffles, but he did rev it up at a school car club meeting. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, turned to see what happened. It was one of the absolutely most beautiful sounds a car can make... I can't wait to hear it running at OT with a load.
Chuck's car has got to make all kinds of neat noises with the solid roller valvetrain, big cam, big compression and high rpm capability to go along with the JCL's in the sidepipes.
Trust me...mine is L-O-U-D at WOT. People just pull out of my way when I stand on it. With no baffles in it at all, it was unbearable even after only 100 miles or so. It was loud at any throttle position, and there's no way I'd even attempt to drive it through my neighborhood at night.
But that's the beauty of these baffles. At idle/cruise they sound really good (and they do make noise, don't get me wrong), but you can still talk a little bit. Then at WOT, it sounds like I'm in a NASCAR stock car.
I wonder what that 350 rwhp translates to in 1/4 mile time? Pls go find out and report back to us!!! :)
What exactly are you "uncapping". I understand you have sidepipes, and the JCLs, are a muffler substitute (?) that fits inside the sidepipes...? What are the caps that you are uncapping? MJ
With good gearing, and a race weight of ~3500lbs (including driver), 350rwhp (especially since the TQ is way up there... which means the AVERAGE HP over a run is much more than if the power is really peaky in the upper rpms) should be = to ~110-112mph through the traps.
My '02 Z06 stock made 350rwhp, but it is only 3250lbs with driver and ran 116mph. It also has outstanding gearing in the trans, and obviously better aerodynamics.
Suffice it to say he can run 12s on radials easily. :D
As far as "uncapped"...the spiral turbo baffles literally have a "capped" tube that runs through the center. If you grind off the tack welds that attach the cap to the tube, then you not only have the spiral effect of the vanes that run around the tube and allow exhaust to pass through, but you also have a decent sized "straight pipe" inside now.
It does not surprise me that 1bad69 picked up 30rwhp.
mnjack...if some of the toronto guys head to the track this summer i would love to make a few passes to see for sure...
wes..i was really pleased when i de-cap-itated( ) the baffles..it seemed to lite up the tires a little bit easier...i was suprised to get that much extra from such a simple thing...very happy though... hopefully this will keep me happy for the summer so my cash can stay in my pocket...
although, there is a guy that wants to get rid of his L88 which he bought back in the early 70's? over the counter at GM... ;)
