Well after pulling the fronts apart it was blatently obvious that the rears were not SS sleeved. The fronts were bright and shiny the rears look like my engine block did before I had it bored. I think that they are also way 2 rough to try and rebuild. I called AutoZone and they have the rears in stock for $53.99 after core. What I am thinking is go buy new rear ones and then install the O-ring kits in them. I know I can do this through VB&P but when you factor in the shipping charge plus the chance that they may not except what I have as cores I think that this is my best option. Any opinions on this idea.
As for the fronts, I think that they were replaced just prior to me buying the car. the cylinder are flawless so they should except the O-ring set easily.
Smart move getting the calipers locally, no doubt about getting the core charge back. Let us know how installing the O-ring kit goes. I may want to do that to my calipers if its not a major PITA.
BEWARE of the o-ring "kit" you buy, the VBP will work just fine but the Zero Tolerance kit requires you grind the bottom of ALL the bores where the ss sleeve ends. They (at least not VBP) do NOT bore the hole for the new sleeve EXACTLY centered to the existing hole. PITA!!! ...redvetracr
I can tell you this. Taking the calipers apart and putting them back together is a peice of cake. :yesnod: I just finished putting the cores back together and if the O-rings are anything like the lip seals this will be one of the easiest jobs I have done yet. And I am sure you know as well as I that working on your Vette and easy job arent said in the same breath often. ;)
I just rebuilt one of mine blackrat and it turned out to be pretty easy (minus putting in my dust boots on backwards and realizing it only after i put them together and them installed on the car :mad) oh well, but i'm pretty happy with the way it went. I ended up painting them red and it looks pretty sharp (but it will probably flake off because i only used red indoor outdoor spraypaint... )
I feel your pain. I used Krylon Purple on mine to match what I painted my engine block with. They look good now but I doubt when I start driving if they will last. I never could find any high temp purple so I had to go with what I could find. I did wash them thoroughly with soap and water then put a couple of base coats of high temp blue followed by the purple then sealed it with high temp clear. Probably want last but hey they look cool now. :yesnod:
Blackrat, one more thing, how many kits did you order? I made the mistake of only ordering one, thinking one kit would do both front calipers, to my mistake the 27.97 kit only rebuilds one, so i had to order another one yesteday, and i'll end up paying crazy shipping charges and brokerage cause i'm from canada
I did almost make the same mistake. The web site is misleading because the picture shows 8 pistons and the desription gives no indication of what is required. Fortunately I had a catelogue on hand and it says one kit does 1 caliper. :cuss I thought that $27 was awful cheap for something coming from VB&P. :yesnod:
