I got the slotted trailing arm shims held in by a big cotter pin.
A C3 book I have (Newton) shows the shims lying down, touching the crossmember. Seems like they might rattle that way. Any reason why they can't stand up? Also, the rails are single thickness there; double below where the holes would go. Easier drilling.
I'm not sure what you mean. The shims should be put in so the cotter pin lines them up( I also think that the cotter pins are a backup so, if they do come lose they don't fallout) and the control arm bolt holds them in. They are in a downward postion, sort of against the pocket. I've never seen them in an upward postion.
I think the old ones stayed down before they put in the cotter pins, it locks the shims in that way. Later, they probably just drilled the holes there. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it.) Joe
