That could mean that #2 is the one that is firing out of time due to cross fire in the cap. so what cylinders are closest to #2 in the cap? Lets see...the firing order goes 18436572. So I would say maybe a bad plug or wire in either #7 or #1 since those are the ones that are next to #2 in the cap. so when the charge for 1 or 7 can make ground thru the plug for whatever reason, that charge will find the next closest path to ground. So it could be jumping to post #2 in the cap. #2 fires out of time with the exhaust valve open and POP!!!
Jevette 73 - Good reasoning, but how can you get a fire on a cyl that was just lit? It could be a weak spark or bad plug on that cyl #2 too (not getting full burn) which would back up your theory.
One thing you could check is for a vac leak. My other car use to pop like crazy in gear going down a hill. I found a small vac line disconnected. Hooked it up, no more popping. Another thing that will cause popping is a bad diverter valve on your A.I.R. system. (if you still have the smog hooked up)An easy check on this is to look at the rubber hose that goes into the exhaust manifold from the smog pump. If it's dried out or burnt looking, the valve is bad.
If you still have the problem, do a compression test. The #2 cyl may have a bad exhaust valve - hope not :(
71coupe, good point on the posibilty of burnt exhaust valve in #2.
I can personaly attest to the fact that unburnt gasses in the exhause will cause a pop when a plug fires out of time. I traced this exact problem with now cure. My bro came over one day and listened to it. He explained to me the situation as I have repeated. When I changed the plugs the problem was solved. I had one bad plug that would not let the charge ground. So it jumped posts to the adjacent cylinder in cap order and fired that one out of time causing the popping.
