Here's how I did it on my 1980. My pictures here are done with the latch out of the car, but it's the same as if it's in the car.
Start with the glove box open, but with the latch in the closed position. You want to carefully push down on each of the lock pawls through a little window and pull the lock mechanism out of the latch mechanism . . . a pin or paperclip should be good for that. The pin in the picture points to the little window where the pawls should be visible.
This is what it looks like with the lock mechanism out. You can see the pawls better now.
Finally, that cap on the end of the latch mechanism is what holds it tight in the glove box door. Take it off or tighten it up as necessary.
Then just reassemble the unit following the directions in reverse.
Re: How to remove 81 glove box latch??? (80Xflags)
Please submit that to tech-tips! There is no way I would have been able to figure that out without your instructions...luckily I have a 75 which just has a screw.
Stupid Question.
How do I tell which part is busted..
- 1978-82 Glove Box Door Lock Case
- 1978-82 Glove Box Lock Cylinder
I have removed the latch from the car...
- I am able to get the female end stuck 'half way closed' just by pushing it there with my finger.
- If I don't have the cylinder in, the female end moves without resistance.
