All depends on what you want to pay, how impt. is NOM to you. Last year I built a 383 stroker and have been very satisfied with it, well in all honesty, MountainMotor designed it, and my mechanic showed me how to assemble it. I have just torn it down to see how it survived last year, and all looks great, thank goodness. Figure out how much you are prepared to spend, then add at least 50% for rebuilding into a stroker. Another option is to crate your motor, and build a new one, many here have bought ZZ4's or other crate motors. Next Sat. I'll intro. you to a few ppl who done done both and you'll hear from the the pro's and con's of each.

Greg..you ripped apart your motor to see how it survived last year? thats a mean curiousity you have there...as long as it runs strong i am happy...
as for this post? i say bigger is better... :hurray:
I thought I had an oil pressure problem, turned out it wasn't what I was worried it might have been. Given that I did a lot of the assembly, and it was my first time I always had this nagging feeling in the back of my mind that I forgot to do something or didn't do something right. I feel a lot better after seeing it and having a friend go over it just to macke sure.
heads
pushrods
cam
lifters
intake manifold
carburator
thats what im doing now but i plan on putting in a 427 in a few years the L 48 is pretty easy to work on but you will probly want to elimnate the EGR system, i made a black off plate for the egr valve from bar stock aluminum and put a 5/8( i think) fine thread bolt into the hole where the tubes to run it go in to the intake manifold my new carb wouldnt work with the egr and if you have the A.I.R. consider reemoving that but only if you dont nee emmisions
Unless you just want to build your own engine, I'd say go with a crate engine.
In the end, it will cost you about the same thing, except that with a crate engine you get a warranty.
Sounds like a ZZ4 crate would be perfect for you. I'd take your original engine and store it. That way if you ever want to sell it, you can put it back original.
If I can get over to meet you guys this week or if you want to meet me indiviually, I will show you what a typical heads, cam, intake, exhaust rebuild of an L48 can do. For the record last weekend, in my TH350 L48 '80 I took a 2002 5spd Mustang GT through to 120km/h. Its not big block fast but it is a high 13 second car.
when you meet MotorHead, Wayne talk to him about his 355, it is one of the sweetest engines on the forum, which adds credence to the old hooker's tale that" bigger ain't necessarily better". He cruises all day long, gets good mileage and can most most of the cars on the road when he wants to. Depending on what you want out of your motor a 355 like Waynes is perfect, although I like my 383 but there are always tradeoffs. Was thinking about a bb until was in both the Viper and Z06, the sb is a fantastic engine, smooth and efficient without all that weight on the front end.
