I found the perfect transmission, thanks to all of the informative replies that I recieved. D&D Performance has a Viper T-56 trans that will with minumum fabrication adapt to my 79. On this trans 5th and 6th are Overdrive, 5th is .78 and 6th is an unbelievable .50! Interstates here I come, looking for those foreign $50,000 to $100,000 "sports" cars which I will proceed to blow away! They must be taught to respect the Corvette, especially the ones like mine who are presumed to be wimpy 200 hp cars with no real performance.
Just joking, thanks again to all that bothered to try to help me. Phil
I put a ROD 6 speed into my 69. I didn't have to relocate the e brake pulley. It's been nearly 4 years ago so I don't remember all the little things I had to do, but it was worth it. Probably the best modification I have done by far! BTW, you should be able to get that trans for about $2800 to $2900.
Thanks for replying, the tech paper was informative but was all about the Tremec Trans and not the Richmond Gear. It looks like there are a lot more modifications and expense involved with this trans,(according to Richmond Gears advice).
According to Richmond Gear there is no modification needed to the crossmember itself, only the relocation 2 inches to the rear of the mounting holes in the trans bracket which bolts to the crossmember. ??
Go here, http://www.att.net/~ncarboni/nc82.html he installed the Richmond 6-spd into his /82, the site has pics of the install, very informative, has an email addy, he does respond to questions. good luck
I know keisler makes this swap and they claim it is a complete bolt in I had the link at one time but lost it. Someone had posted it on the forum maybe you can find it in the archives. Anyway the kit they heave relocates the shifter to stock location with out cutting your car up they also do some machine work to the transmission housing so it will clear the stock cross member. and the price is around $3000.00 for the complete kit.
Hi Stinky,
I opened up that address that you supplied for the individual who installed the 6-speed into their Vette. It is a site for World Net and I could not find any way to contact the individual using that address. Do you have his E-Mail address?? Thanks. Phil
I did mine without cutting the cross member. I did have to buy a new Turbo 400 rear yoke and have it cut down about 3/4" and get a shortened drive shaft (less than $200) fabricated. I installed the engine and trans together. You will want to make sure that the clutch pivot ball is the right length. If it's too short, the lever will hit the firewall when you push in the clutch.
I am now pulling everything back out (mostly because I am a masochist) and will be installing a McLeod dual disc clutch with aluminum flywheel. The dual disc clutches are expected to outlast the car so the fixed cross member should not be a problem once the job is done. Yet this clutch/flywheel assembly did set me back about $800. I bought the trans and the McLeod stuff through Summit Racing. I think the trans is now about $2900. Make sure you get the right one. You may want to go with the 2.77:1 first gear with the 3.73's your running now. this will give you even more leverage than the 3.27:1 with 3.08's I am running now which is just about perfect for me.
Setting up the linkage rods is crucial for a smooth running trans. I made my own rear trans mount which was not too hard but did take some creativity. I can probably take pictures and measurements when I take apart within the next couple weeks if you like.
I currently use the lightweight factory 153 tooth flywheel. The shifts are done in the time it takes to say "snick" without working the synchros one bit. The shift action feels like the action of a good hunting rifle: smooth, precise, and solid. I love the trans and shifter much better than my ZO6's.
Phillip, sorry 'bout that, made error in the addy but is corrected now, try it again. If it doesn't work, then let me know and I'll get you the info. mike http://home.att.net/~ncarboni/NC82.html
