Looks like I'm heading down the path for a differential rebuild. Being a shade tree mechanic I need some help in a couple of areas.
1) How do I positively identify the rear. I "un-scientifically" spun the drive shaft and counted 3.75 rotations per each rotation of the tires. 3.75 ratio?
2) What is a good reliable rebuild kit? From a previous thread it sounds like I have a bad pinion bearing.
3) While I'm in there should I replace the pinion and ring?
4) Is there a good resource available to instruct a newbie at this task?
5) Is there anything else I should consider replacing at this point?
It's likely a 3.70 rear gear. Setting up a ring and pinion ain't rocket science, but it's not like changing spark plugs either. Get the GM Chassis Overhaul manual for your year model car. It has a complete description of how to overhaul the differential. While you've got it out of the car you should do a thorough inspection of the side yokes, all u-joints, rear suspension bushings and shocks, and fix anything that warrants replacement.
I'm going to follow this one. Keep us informed of the progress Robs70. It seems I have a worn ring and pinion, 3:55 rear end. The price to replace the gears is between 200-300 and that doesn't include bearings or seals if I need them. Zip has a rebuilt one for my rear that will come with a 3 year warranty for $579. I'm thinking it might be worth it to bite the bullet and buy a rebuilt one. Mine is whining, louder at highway speed right now, I don't know if I should just wait or what.
