Default 1980 smog equipment

What is the smog equipment that is hooked up in my 80? will the car run if I disconnect all the smog equipment. What is the smog pump? do I need to have it or is it for emisions laws?

AIR pump, EGR, cat converter are all standard on your 80. Yes, based upon your state if you rip if off you may not pass emissions and if your state is "if it was made with it - it better be there", you risk some serious problems.

Yes, the engine is tuned for an A/F mixture to run with the equipment. Example, pulling the EGR can cause a lean condition that can burn valves. It is not just "rip if off" and go.

Frankly, a well tuned engine with mild upgrades like intake, cam, roller rockers, will run clean and up the performance for little cost.

Make a good decision.

Your engine should look like this. I will not attempt to explain all that plumbing... ;)
