A brand new rubber mount and it has seperated. Which engine mount should I get to prevent this? My new engine produce good low end torque :D....maybe the part was just bad?
Anyway, I just installed a chain from the frame to the left exhaust manifold bolt to keep the engine in it's place. Maybe I'll keep it even with new heavy duty mount.
Re: Ever tear an engine rubber mount... (American Boy)
I just used the replacement GM motor mounts on my 1980. Kind of pricey but they look and fit just like the original ones I took off.
Some of the aftermarket ones looked too cheap. Several threads on the archives on motor mounts. Ask ten guys and you will get twelve opinions. :yesnod:

Re: Ever tear an engine rubber mount... (American Boy)
I'm using an old Hot Rod mag. tech tip. Just drilled a small (tight fit) hole for a short 1/4 20 bolt with self-lock nut through stock mount. No torque on nut - just snug. Haven't started up yet so take this for what its worth.
This allows mount to squish down and absorb shock but mount can't separate.
Broken motor mount caused my fan to chew up the shroud and the start of major repairs. :nopity
Re: Ever tear an engine rubber mount... (Twin_Turbo)
lots of cursing and swearing and busted knuckles
That's 2 of us then! I even ran out of words & had to use some foreign ones  The front bolt on each side was a real PITA to get to. I replaced my mounts with the locking type as the broken ones were that type & no damage had been done. I don't want to have to do that job again for a long time..... :(
I put in poly mounts wit hno trouble at all. These are not as harsh as solid mounts but stiffer than the stock rubber mounts. I chewed up a fan shroud last year due to broken rubber mounts.
Re: Ever tear an engine rubber mount... (American Boy)
I took the suggestion of a local race shop with mine.
When I put the car up last winter I decided to check out the clunking noise my care made when I shifted. I assumed it was a motor mount, but I'd never heard one make noise like that. When I took them out I was surprised to find not one but two completely seperated motor mounts (thank you transmission mount for holding the whole thing in place).
What I did was replace the driver's side mount with a solid one from moroso and the passenger side one with a locking rubber. The motor only really torques to the passenger side (unless you like to jump on it in reverse), so the rubber absorbs the majority of the vibration while the steel helps you reclaim lost power. It also forces the engine to move only laterally. This stops the twisting forces that help really tear up rubber mounts.
Driving it around this summer I haven't noticed a real vibration difference, but its much more solid going from gear to gear (but then what wouldn't be if I were comparing it to broken mounts)
I also relpaced the transmission mount at the same time with a urethane one.
Hope some of this helps. I don't know know about anyone else, but I had to do a little shimming to get my mounts to center perfectly. If I can help anyone else out with this info, let me know.
