Default Idle RPMs, CC XE262

I was just reading one post about someones engine running on after shut down. Lars replied and said there was a bulliten issued that said to lower the RPM by 50 rpm. That made me wonder about my idle speed. Right now it is idling around 650 rpm. Is this ok? Just a curiosity.

I think so. If a stick, you may be even on the low side of normal, but if it idles fine and doesn't run on, you're ok. My 327 (same XE262 cam) is set higher around 750rpm which come to think of it is actually the recommended idle speed for the stock L79. If an auto, 650 in drive would probably be pretty close.

It is a 4 speed. I should have added that. Oops. :conehead

If you're not having any problems, 650 should be just fine. A lot of guys resort to a higher idle speed than should be needed because they are trying to mask another problem (or they think a Corvette should idle as smooth as a Caddilac :)). If lower works for you, then lower is better.

68Shark,
The XE262 is what's in my 327. It has the cast iron Vortec heads and Vortec performer intake. Measyred CR is around 9.5. Hope to have it fired off this summer. Doing a frame replacement and a "while I'm in there" project. What kind of idla attitude do you have? Nice little lope? I thought about the XE268 but would like a hard pulling daily driver that will rarely see over 5500. With a 4 speed the XE262 seems to fit.

The sound is quite nice, just a little "lopey" but not too much and with a good strong idle. The 268 wasn't recommended to me on the basis that would give up too much bottom end. I had to remember that all the cam card specs are based on a 350 and a 262 cam will feel "bigger" in a smaller displacement engine like the 327. With a 4 speed, think you made a real good choice! My car pulled 229rwhp and 277rwtq on the dyno last summer and that's with 10 to 1 comp. using the stock heads/intake/carb/exhaust. Very good torque curve with more than 80% of that available from 2000 up so she pulls pretty good! All of that info (and a pic) are in my sig.
Sounds like you have quite the project underway....look forward to reading more about it here!
