Has anyone who has done a TPI set up reworked their belt and bracket set up. I am looking at a conversion and want to maintain an AIR pump (California). Current AIR pump would block throttle body. Also bracket for A/C is on the current intake. Need to modify.
If anyone has done this, assist would be appreciated.
Re: TPI Conversion and belts and brackets (wombvette)
i used all the parts from the 87 trans am i had excpet for my power steering pump from the vette.no air pump though,it originally was on the passenger side down low on the fbody's.theres a bracket that bolts to the block that hold the air pump in place.are you trying to keep your a/c and alternator in the stock places?
Re: TPI Conversion and belts and brackets (patsnitrovette)
I would rather keep them in the stock places rather than reinventing the wheel so to speak. Main concern is that dumb AIR pump. Therefore looking for ideas how to do this. State of CA CARB says I can dothis, but need to meet the emissions standards of the system I am installing. THerefore need to relocate the AIR pump and modify the AC bracket unless it fits on TPI manifold. I will also run 2 chips, one for the state and one for me..
Re: TPI Conversion and belts and brackets (timbo79)
I would use the stock setup from '88-91 vette, and change the compressor for that Asian unit they use in those years.....might look at my site, I used to have an airpump on it, but replaced with air pump eliminator pulley ....
Re: TPI Conversion and belts and brackets (mrvette)
tim,the air pump bracket used on the 85-87 t/a and firebirds and camaros mounts under your a/c to the bottom of the block, this way you can mount it underneath your a/c you might have to shim it abit to line up with your a/c belt but at least you can still retain all your factory stuff.i have the bracket but its at my dads ill have to go remove it off the block if you need it.
Re: TPI Conversion and belts and brackets (patsnitrovette)
Pat, you sure there is room under there for anything the size of an airpump on a shark?? that a/c side is very close with just the idler tension pulley anything bigger it seems like 2lbs in a 1 lb bag.....???
Re: TPI Conversion and belts and brackets (patsnitrovette)
I had a complete '87 vette engine with everything on it from a guys wreck, and I picked up a whole lot of parts, back when I had my '87 vette yet...over 10 years ago.....the engine donated the entire serpentine setup for my '72 here, never did use the engine itself, as it was intended for a boat install that never was done....at any rate, I changed just the a/c over to the later style...didn't want an R4 in my car....and the A6 is just tooooooo heavy....
so the Oriental made '88 up compressor was used....

GENE
Not sure on the vette set up but on my 89 Formula the first thing I did was yank the smog pump (wasn't hooked up anyways) and rerouted a shorter belt to eliminate it, no need for a replacement pulley.
