Hey guys, I have been looking at many of the chrome bumper cars on the forum and also other pics in magazines and such. The alignment of my front frills and the bumperets seem to be off by at least a 1/2 inch. Not sure if it is very obvious in my signature but when you look at my car from the front the chrome surface of the grills are lower than the area where they are supposed to line up with the bumperets. There is also a gap in there. Is there an adjustment for this? I would think that it would have to be on the bumberet because the grills screw into the body. Any suggestions?
Blackrat, you are having the questions that I am having. Having taken my 69 apart for painting 10 months agoand not paying attention to detail, I am now putting it back together. I have the same problems with the bumpers as you. The one which is driving me nuts is the front bumper. It is off center by about 1/4". from close up I can see the miss alignment but when I step back to about 5 feet you really can't tell. I am planning on taking it off and slotting the center support to se if I can align better. Also, my bumper guards also don't ine up well either. From what I see at the vette shows and the mags and the pictures i have taken , anything goes. From my findings no two are alike. I want mine to line up perfect but I think this is goig to be a pipe dream.
I also had the same issues with the door gaps. After going thru 3 set of doors I came to the conclusion the gaps would never be perfect.
I think the 50/50 rule is going to have to work for me. At 50 mph and from 50 feet, if you don't see it , it's not there..
If you take your grills off, you will see that there are four mounting brackets (at least that is how my 69 is set up). The mounting brackets are made of flexible sheet metal and do have some play. They will bend a bit to allow for centering. That said, unless yours are way off, I wouldn't mess with the brackets. The two center (left and right side towards the middle) brackets also hold the center grill in place. I opted to adjust for the outer grills since my license plate obscures the center grill anyway. Good luck.
