Is there an easy way to paint the black portion of the grill without having to do LOTS of masking? Also, is it suppose to be black (with the chrome outline)? One of mine appears black, and the other is charcoal gray.
Black with chrome outline. I painted the whole grille black and then rapped a piece of wood with a rag that was slightly dampened with thinner and wiped the outer edges to remove the excess paint. You can also try putting vaseline or something similar on the edges before you spray and then wiping off after the paint is dry.

I had these grilles on my 68 because I like the look.
I painted mine exactly the way carlmb suggested. I tried both ways back in the mid seventies and found the wood block and rag worked very well. Vaseline applied with a small modeling paint brush works well but you need to have a steady hand, for me the wood block worked better.
Go slow and take your time.
