Fuel Pump advice
What would be a good high-performance fuel pump to use in my application?
My engine should be making between 350-400hp once I complete everything. Carburetion will either be a Holley Spreadbore or a 670 Street Avenger.
Before I do anything else, I want to replace the stock fuel pump which seems to be having trouble with 300hp :lol:
There are many considerations to buying the fuel pump that I'm not sure about. For one, I know that with some I need a regulator. However, I think Carter makes one that is internally regulated. I would prefer this.
Second, some of the descriptions for the fuel pumps mention vapor return lines. I am assuming I have these, so are these lines needed, or do I need a fuel pump that will allow the connection of these lines.
Also, what fuel filter should I use? I hate those see-thru glass ones, and some of the others seem way overpriced for what they are.
Anyone have a part number for a good fuel pump and filter?

I'll let the other guys fill you in on fuel pumps since I'm still running my stock unit. As for fuel filters, go to http://www.corvettefaq.com and look up Lars' posting on how to build a better setup using a C4 filter and some tubing. Typically, he provides comprehensive instructions and supplies P/Ns for everything, including the tubing. I'm planning to run this on my '80 some time this summer.
If you decide you can live without the return line (many here say you can), I've got a brand new GM Performance Parts mechanical fuel pump (110 Gallons Per Hour - same as Holley and Carter) & I'd be happy to sell it to you for under cost (P/N 12355612).

Im using the Carter high volume mechanical pump. Its internally regulated to 7psi I believe. It did not have a fitting for the return line. My solution was to install a Mopar style inline filter that I got at the discount parts store for about $4. It has one line on the "in" side, and two on the "out". pic below, click link for a fullsize pic. You can see the second line from the top of filter snake back down to the return line. Kill two birds with one stone. Handle yur filter issue, as well as yur return issue. i also wrapped the rubber lines in critical areas with 5/8" heater hose sliced lengthwise to protect from rubbing against block and whatnot.

I am using a stock replacement pump and I am putting out about 350-375 hp at the crank. I was able to run 13.4 @ 104 mph in the qtr shifting at 6000 rpm's so I feel the stock pump is OK to 400 hp. Maybe your pump is bad. :confused:

Incidentally, I bought it before I checked with the Forum about running a higher performance fuel pump. IIRC, the results were about evenly split, but I was concerned about not having a return line, so I kept the stock unit on. If that won't be a problem for you, this might be the way to go. It's still in the box from when I bought it about a month ago & should give you great performance @ about half what the comparable Edelbrock & Holley units cost.

Barry Grant makes some that around 130 GPH around 9 PSI. they have parts for your entire fuel system
