If I want a C3 with a manual transmission, I know it's much easier to buy a car with an original 4 speed. Nevertheless, how hard is it to remove a cross member from a C3 with an automatic and install a manual trans cross member? I know the manual trans cross member must be welded in. Thank you.
Might be almost as cheap to buy the Keisler TKO tranny which should bolt right in. With the muncie you will need to get a muncie, the shifter and all the linkage, brackets, console plate, etc. and still not have o/d.
It was welded in from the ffactory but there is no need for it.... It provides a little more torsional strength than the removeable one but not much more.... leave it removable and tranny swaps and clutch redo's will be a breeze, thats what I'm doing.
If you want to weld in a new crossmember, it can be done with the body on but way easier if the body is off.
What transmission is in the car now?I was searching the web for transmission dimensions and found a site that had case dimensions posted.Maybe you won't need to change the crossmember at all.A bit of modding perhaps for the rear trans mount.I think the TH350 is almost the same length as most of the Muncies and Borg Warners, not sure of the mount locations though.
Are you talking about buying an auto car and converting to a 4-spd? If so, the removable cross-member is a huge bonus for getting the tranny and clutch in and out. The only issue is welding in the clutch Z-bar bracket on the frame. A muncie will fit perfectly on the auto crossmember with the bolt-on 4-speed bracket. No driveshaft or yoke issues.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply to my questions. I appreciate your efforts. I was interested to learn that a cross member for an automatic can be used with a manual transmission. DSKRALL
