I just bought a 79 coupe. The camshaft needs replacing. Before I do this, I need to fix the tach. I think I need a new circuit board. With the battery disconnected, the tach reads zero. When I connect the battery the tach slowly rises, when I start the engine, the tach pegs. Does this sound like the board, or a problem with the wiring from the distributor? Thanks for any and all advice.
Welcome to the Forum  I have the same problem on my '79-but after I've started it, it returns to normal. When I reconnect the battery, the needle rests in the extreme clockwise position. I would guess it's a problem with the circuit, because I've replaced my distributor and checked it a few times, although I could be wrong.

Re: 79 Tachometer problem. New C3 owner. (79Corvette02)
Welcome to the forum.
Yes, this sounds familiar from others who said they replaced the board. You can get the new boards from Mid America Vette and I think Ecklers as well.
I've recently pulled the tach out of my '79. I'd be happy to donate my old tach and pcb to your cause, provided you pay shipping. When I pulled it out it was functioning fine, I've updated my guages to the AutoMeter Ultra-Comps and have no need for the old guage. Send me an email offline if your interested.
