I'm a C3 newbie - just got my 69 coupe a few weeks ago. I promise I'll post a pic as soon as I can figure out how to do so. I'll be the 1st to admit, I'm not much of a gear head, but I'm learning, so pardon my igorance as I learn. Also just curious any C3 and HD owners? I also have a 2001 Road King.
Any way, here's my problem. Had the vette out last night to try and impress the street rodders in town this weekend :D and when I got home the power window on the drivers side wouldn't work. I looked through the couple of manuals I have, but I couldn't find much on the windows, other than there's supposed to be a circuit breaker for the windows, but not sure where that is. I figure the breaker is probably OK anyway since the passenger window works fine. When I try to operate the window, I can hear a faint click coming from the window motor. Any ideas?
The P/W circuit breaker is on the firewall in the engine compartment. Drivers side. It's a little block with two wires. It controls both windows. Bad grounds (or lack of) are a major source of electrical problem in Corvettes
Hey Nick!
Welcome to the forum. Can't help on the windows. I know we'll all be waiting on the pics. You'll have to have the pics loaded on a web host then use the url between the Please hurry as some of us are low on pic fixes
I had a similar situation. My car was beautiful but funky windows made it feel like a beater. Go ahead and take off the interior door panel with a screwdriver mostly. Then you can really see what is going on. Is that motor clicking or is the gear stripped and just barely rubbing on the other? That is the main question. If the gear is shot you can easily replace the small one on the motor. The large one on the window lift can be repaired with a bolt on plate without taking the whle thing out of the door. If it is gears, it is probably caused by parts that don't slide easily together. Cleaning and replacing broken bushings is not too expensive and will correct the root of the problem. If the motor is dead you can replace easily enough.
I did pull the panel off and it looks to me that the clicking is coming from the motor and not the gear being stripped. The motor is also a used replacement, so apparently this was a problem sometime in the past. So I take it I should just get a new motor? Any suggestions where? Also what's the easiest way to get the motor off, maybe I'm blind, but it didn't look like I could just remove a couple bolts and it comes off.
You might try removing the motor and see if it works. The window could be binding. Perhaps the window mechanism lacks lubricant or is out of alignment.
There is an alignment routine in the A.I.M. and the Corvette Shop Manual for your specific year has repair and alignment procedures also.
Re: newbie with a question: power windows (mapman)
Nice ride Clyde! I've replaced LOTS of power window motors. Try this first: hold the power window switch in the up postion (key on) and give the door a good sharp blow with your fist, right near the motor. No kiddin' I've got more vette windows to go up by doing this than you can shake a stick at. If it works after one or two blows, lube the @#%$ out of it with PB Blaster or WD40 and you might be OK. If it doesn't work you have to R&R the window regulator and change the motor on the bench. Should take about two hours, six beers and lots of cussin'.
Good luck, Greg
I don’t know if this applies to your 69, but the windows quit working on my 78, I changed the window relay under the center console and they worked fine.
As for Corvette and HD there are a lot of us here. Check the sig.
Welcome
I had the same problem in my 79 one time. I took the door panels off and found out that the power mirror cable was holding the window from moving. After a little time, I was able to tie the mirror cable to the side of the door and it allowed the window to move freely. I haven't had the problem since.
Thanks again,
Nick
Welcome! :seeya
If you reach inside the door and to the outter most side of the window motor, there should be a plate with 3 bolts in it holding the window motor in. Once those bolts are out you just have to wiggle the motor out. Separating the motor and the gear before pulling them out may help . . . that's what I've found. Also, if the regulator is gunked up with old grease, you may want to take that out and clean it up. Gunk may cause the window to bind up, or at least run slow.
I must admit, I kind of chuckled when I read your response, but thought what the hell, I've got nothing to lose, so I smacked it a couple of times and it went right up. Now all I have to do it lube it up, but I think I'll look for a spare motor on Ebay just in case.
Thanks everyone for the advice. trust me you'll probably see plenty of me asking questions. I just ordered parts to replace the washer jar and pump, didn't take notice to them missing when I purchased the vette - like I said I am a newbie! Hey any advice on installing that would be appreciated also.
