The problem is, I don't think you can pinpoint a VIN number where they switched all the "early" parts over to "late" parts. As I understand it, they were producing 1980 parts before the end of the '79 run. As they ran out of 1979 parts, they installed 1980 parts (this is why all the "late" parts where pretty much installed in August 1979). They didn't run out of all the parts at the same time, so you have some odd combo's with some "early" and some "late" parts.
I think the way you have to look at it is not whether you have a "early" or "late" Vette, but is the specific part you're looking to replace an early or late part.

What's your build date. With enought input from CF, we could be rewritting NCRS manuals. They list the latist three door 79 at VIN 53202. You've backed it up by your VIN number and build date.
By 53677, its confirmed two door were well into installation.
Regarding the speedometer, by 44598 (and before 48940) the plant had begun to use the 1980 speedo the 85 mph unit.
I'll check the build date this evening; I'm at work currently :(
Will the build date be on the label, near the driver's side door hinge? Maybe I'll look under the seats to see if the build sheet is there as well.

Yes...check the stainless steel label and there will be a code like C10...third month of production or November 10th! September is month A.
You'll have to pull up your carpeting...it should be so easy.

Looks like I win the prize for the non-standard vette.
I have the 85mph speedo - late model
I have the bent turn single lever - late model
I have the 3 door compartment - early model
That date that I gave you was printed on the GVW sticker. That sticker is faded and peeling, and I didn't see a specific day. The stainless plate that is near the door hinge only has paint codes, from what I could tell. The only thing on the steel plate that looked even close was M11, not sure what that means.
Is there anywhere else that I can look? Or is the code actually on the plate I was looking at?
