Ok, I'm ready to try this on the '81. Picked up a rebuilt M4ME off an '80, but haven't decided on an HEI distributor yet. Proform? Suggestions? Who has done this, and how about some before and after experiences.
A buddy of mine has a converted non-ECM 81, he has a Holley 650 Spreadbore carb and a stock GM Vacuum advance distributor. I have no idea how the converter lockup is handled on the TH350C, but it does lockup.
Did this to my 81 few years ago and still running strong without a problem!
Replace the Qjet with a 650 holley spread board carb.
Replace distributor with a used none- computer control one. (Should only have one set of 3 wires on it).
Leave the computer in place for converter lock up. You need to disconnect the idiot engine light. Oil, fuel, temp, Alt...gauges work. Who need the engine light?
The performance in throtle response likes night and day! you won't be disappointed.
